Gulf Coast Combustion has been performing industrial heat treating since 2014. James Benefield, GCC’s owner, spent years before that as the technician other companies called when a heat treating job had gone wrong and needed to be corrected. That depth of experience is available as a consulting service — for fabricators, plant operators, and companies looking to build or improve their own heat treating capability.
Consulting is available by phone, on-site, or both. James answers directly.
Where We Can Help

- Heat Treating Procedure Review
- Furnace Planning, Build & Commissioning
- Equipment Selection & Sizing
- Personnel Training
- Code Compliance & Documentation Guidance
Pre-Job Technical Consulting
The most common consulting GCC provides happens before a job starts. If you have a vessel coming up and want to talk through the approach — wall thickness, thermocouple placement strategy, heat-up and cool-down rates, execution plan — call James before the work begins. There’s no charge to talk through the technical details. GCC does this regularly with fabricators who want to make sure they’re set up correctly before mobilization.
This is also where code questions get answered. P-Numbers, ASME Section VIII thickness requirements, WPS review, documentation requirements — James can walk through all of it.
Heat Treating Procedure Review
If your shop has existing heat treating procedures and you want an independent review for accuracy, code compliance, or efficiency, GCC can provide that analysis. Common scenarios include fabricators who have inherited outdated procedures, shops that have expanded into thicker-walled or higher-alloy work, and companies whose documentation practices have been flagged by a third-party auditor.
Furnace Planning, Build & Commissioning
GCC has assisted other companies in planning, building, and commissioning furnaces at their own facilities. If your operation has reached the volume where bringing heat treating in-house makes financial sense, James can help you evaluate the decision, specify the right equipment, and oversee the build and commissioning process. Temporary furnace operations support is also available for companies that need heat treating capability on a project basis.
Equipment Selection & Sizing
Selecting the right heat treating equipment — burner sizing, gas train configuration, electrical resistance console capacity — requires real field experience. GCC can advise on equipment selection for both gas fire and electrical resistance applications, whether you’re setting up a new capability or evaluating existing equipment.
Personnel Training
GCC’s technician certification program has been in continuous use since 2015 and is currently on its third revision. Personnel training for heat treating technicians is available for companies building or expanding their own crews. Training covers equipment operation, thermocouple attachment, documentation procedures, and applicable code requirements.
Code Compliance & Documentation Guidance
Heat treating documentation that doesn’t hold up to third-party audit creates real problems — for fabricators, for their clients, and for code compliance. GCC can review your documentation systems, identify gaps, and help you build a package that meets ASME requirements and stands up to inspection.
